#Leaders4Tomorrow exchange perspectives with the United Nations Disarmament Fellows

On 20 October 2022, 22 of the #Leaders4Tomorrow gathered with the United Nations Disarmament Fellows to exchange perspectives on topics related to disarmament, non-proliferation, and arms control.

During the in-person session, the two cohorts discussed ways to engage youth in disarmament, provide entry points into the disarmament field, and exchange perspectives on current challenges related to international peace and security.

Ms. Soo Hyun Kim, #Youth4Disarmament Lead, and Mr. Peter Kolarov, Disarmament Fellows Coordinator, facilitated the session.

The United Nations Programme of Fellowships on Disarmament has been ongoing since its establishment by the General Assembly at its first special session devoted to disarmament in 1978.

The Programme aims at the training and specialization of national officials in more Member States, particularly in the developing countries, and to enable them to participate more effectively in international deliberating and negotiating fora.

The #Leaders4Tomorrow Workshop Series engaged 24 young leaders on the linkages between Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Arms Control with relevant topics related to international peace and security. Over the next six months, the leaders will implement their projects to engage their fellow youth on topics related to gender, the Sustainable Development Goals, emerging technologies, environment, and education.

Before concluding, the two groups expressed their interest for further collaboration in the future to continue the discussion on key topics and exchange of ideas and knowledge.

Through the exchange, collaborative partnerships were forged across the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs’ programmes to engage, educate, and empower the next generation of leaders in disarmament.
